Summary
Colorado Sundown: A Texas rancher who is trying to help a friend with a ranch he inherited, becomes involved in a murder. The Big Show: The Big Show was filmed on a modest budget but Republic gave it a much more elaborate look for the money. In this western Gene Autry plays dual roles. When cowboy star Tom Ford (played by Autry) disappears, his screen double (played by who else but Gene Autry) impersonates him for the movie studio. Come On Rangers: The Cavalry calls a band of Texas Rangers back into service to combat outlaws. Wild Country: U. S. marshal Eddie Dean takes out after the dirty low-down I. Stanford Jolley, who's wanted for the murder of a sheriff and now has his gun-sights set on the dead man's daughter.

The Legendary Singin’ Cowboys - Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Rex Allen, Eddie Dean VCI Entertainment DVD # 5525 VCI has compiled 4 singing cowboy films on one DVD, especially for those of us who enjoy the musical Westerns. We get a heapin’ helpin’ with Gene Autry’s The Big Show, from 1936, which includes appearances by The Sons of the Pioneers, The Light Crust Doughboys & The Beverly Hill Billies. Then, a young Roy Rogers appears in his third film as a cowboy star, Come On Rangers, from 1938. His sidekick is the very experienced Raymond Hatton, and though the emphasis is on action, there’s good music as well, as Roy croons the beautiful “Let Me Hum a Western Love Song,” among others. At this time, the Sons of the Pioneers were under contract to another studio and would not be working with Roy in his films until 1941. Eddie Dean stars in Wild Country, a 1947 release from PRC Studios, with Roscoe Ates as his sidekick, “Soapy Jones.” There’s some really great music in the film. It’s some of Eddie’s finest, and a good example of Eddie Dean at his musical best, but it’s too bad VCI didn’t use one of Dean’s films with Andy Parker & the Plainsmen. Maybe they will in another release. The real gem in this 4-film set is Rex Allen’s Colorado Sundown from 1951. For some reason, it’s hard to find Rex’s films on commercial DVDs, so this one is particularly welcome. In his last years, Rex made it a point to promote the work of young Western artists through the WMA, so he was a friend to many of us. The film’s fun, too, with Slim Pickens as the comical sidekick and the Republic Rhythm Riders help with the musical chores. Although Republic Studios didn’t place enough emphasis on music in the 1950s, this film has three good songs Rex didn’t record commercially, so viewers are in for a real treat. The price is hard to beat at $4.99 from VCIENT.com or 1-800-331-4077. written by O.J. Sikes
