Bank Holidays may be a time when most are happy. But this is certainly not true for Stephen Howard, who has just lost his wife in childbirth. His grief-stricken state touches the heart of a hospital nurse, Catherine, who offers to accompany him home. He refuses and she is left to go away for the weekend with her boyfriend.
Catherine’s boyfriend, Geoffrey is not earning enough for them to marry so they decide to spend the weekend together at a hotel and snatch a little happiness while they can. All they way down to the coast where to hotel is, Catherine is haunted by the thought of Stephen, alone in his distress and Geoffrey, irritated by her preoccupation, accuses her of being in love with him.
Meanwhile, Stephen has phoned Catherine at the hospital to find out she’s gone for the weekend. Catherine feels for Stephen and is afraid of what he might do so she decides to return to London.
